The last time I got my teeth cleaned, my dentist told me I needed to schedule an appointment soon to remove all four of my wisdom teeth. They are impacted (or some are, not sure) so I'll need the full oral surgery procedure... but... why take them out if they don't hurt at all? I've had no problems with them except when they cut through my gum line, which is mildly uncomfortable.
Anyway, I'll go get it done. I was wondering, also, just how bad it is? How long does it take? How long is the recovery (and what does it entail)? And how many days off of work should I request?

I did the same I left mine and later in life in my forties they started to hurt and go trough the gums and it was very painful and bleeding a lot with a bad taste and a horrific breath as well . My suggestion would be get them out and its only sore for a few days . Have great day and keep smiling .
Reply:As they come in, they will gradually push your remaining teeth together.
The actual surgery is not a big deal - as the dentist will put you to sleep, or use nitrox-oxide - laughing gas - you won't feel a thing.
The post surgery pain is controlled by pain medication. Really only lasts maybe one day or two. Plan on taking off the day of surgery and the day after - although you might feel well enough to go in the next day.
Reply:Your dentist probably recommended that you get them removed because of the impact they will have on your spacing as you get older.
I had mine removed several years ago. They were completely impacted. The procedure took all morning and I was nauseated from the anesthesia. But I recovered well and only had to take 2 days off work.
The worst part is the first day after the removal. Your face is numb, you feel like crap, you need to eat but you can't chew and can't use a straw because of the risk of dry-socket. So it's kind of a bummer. But get some good DVD's and ice cream and pudding and you should be fine.

Reply:It is a piece of cake! With sedation, its no problems. I had all 4 taken out. I remember going in, being a little worried (hate hospitals and stuff). Sat down, had a injection, then i remember being back in the car being driven home. I was knocked out. My friend said the same. It's easy and fairly quick. My dr. told me if all are good it takes about 5 minutes per tooth. If he has to do some cutting to get it out, then maybe like 15 min per tooth. It is honestly like an hour appointment. And the heal time is a few days.
I'd take a few days off, including the day of the surgery.
It's honestly not bad. You'll be fine!

Reply:Going through the procedure is easy because they put you to sleep. After-wards you cannot eat solid foods. You can eat mashed potatoes, applesauce, yogurt, lots of liquids. The pain and swelling comes the next day. The doctor should give you some really good pain killers to help you sleep. I used a neck ice pack and put it on my face to help keep the swelling down. You should schedule it on a Friday morning so you will have the weekend to recover. It took me 3 days for my face to look normal again. I had 3 pulled. You will have to use a syringe with they will give you to help flush out food particles to prevent dry socket. Then for about a week you will notice small stitches falling out unless they dissolve.
Reply:I had my wisdom teeth taken out at the age of sixteen. It really wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. I had to have my wisdom teeth surgicaly removed, and the worst part of it all was the IV. The surgery itself didn't take long, 45 minutes to an hour at the most; concedering there are no major problems. The recovery wasn't bad either. I slept the rest of the afternoon and evening because the IV drugs made me sleepy. My mouth was a little sore and ached a bit for the next 3-4 days, but nothing really painful. I had vicodin for pain and I had much of the prescription left because the pain wasn't bad enough for me to need them. You'll be fine! :)

They were impacted also and the reason I had to get them out was because impacted pretty much means they are laying on their side and my orthodontist told me I had to get them out of they would cause my teeth to shift and I had just gotten my braces off so I didn't want that.
They put me to sleep for it and in a flash they were waking me up telling me I was all done. Hopefully they will be putting you to sleep too. You will need a ride home, you will be very drowsy afterwards. GET YOUR PAIN PERSCRIPTION FILLED ASAP! Trust me about 30 mins after leaving the drs office the drowsiness will wear off and suddenly the pain will hit. That was the worst for me because I had to wait an hour like that for my pain pills. You will sleep a lot the first 2 days from the pain pills, but you will want to anyway. You will be spitting some blood out the first day too. Oh and they should also give antibiotics - don't slack on taking them. I did and one of mine got infected and it was disgusting. :)
Don't forget to gargle with salt water because you won't be able to brush your teeth and forget about trying to eat anything you have to chew it will be impossible. Over all it's not too bad just the first 2 days. You should take 3 days off at least because you will be swollen and sore and you'll look like a chipmunk lol. Good luck
P.S. - Impacted wisdom teeth are more painful to have taken out due to their position which is why some people will tell you it's not bad and others will say it was horrible. Plus some people are more sensetive than others.
Reply:Its definitely not fun. Everybody responds differently.
I've had some patients who are out playing basketball that night (not adviseable), while others seem to be down for a week.
I would plan on at least the 2 days after surgery being "couch and TV days".
The actual procedure should be a breeze - most people see oral surgeons for their surgery and they are asleep during the whole process.
The hard part is the recovery. The first day isn't that bad - patients often are so groggy and "drugged up" that they won't feel or remember much of anything from that day.
The 2nd and 3rd day can be pretty miserable though. Your surgeon will give you a prescription for lots of pain meds - don't be afraid to use them as directed.
The best thing to do is to pay close attention to all the instructions your surgen and his staff give you and follow them closely. This is the best way to have a smooth recovery.
Now as to WHY is removing them important?
To me, the possibility of the teeth shifting later in life is only a small issue.
The biggest problem is that teeth that are impacted under the gums and bones can sometime develop cysts and tumors around them. I have one patient in particular that has a very large cyst (basically a big hole filled with pus) that has developed around the tooth INSIDE the jaw bone.
He will have to have a major surgery to resolve it, months of recovery, and right now could very easily break his whole jawbone in half if his 2 year old whacks him just the right way.
If he would have had the darn thing removed when he was a teenager... this never would have happened!

letting them be ther will be a source of problems later on.
impacted wisdom teeth can cause severe pain in jaws as they will impinge on the forward teeth. also, they can result in cyst formation in jaw bones.
partially erupted teeth cause infection of the overlying flap of gums..called as pericoronitis (which is again painful)
getting impaction surgery done is no big deal..... but my suggestion to you is to get only one side operated at a time.
i.e either left or right... by this atleast you have the other side to chew.
there can be post operative swelling and pain. so, take proper medications ur dentist will advice.

Reply:the actual surgery is nothing if you go to an oral surgeon you'll be able to sleep through the entire thing...and they numb you up so well you wont feel a thing for a while after the surgery. take the pain meds....have a stack of your favorite movies on hand, some pudding and apple sauce and you'll be good to go. ice packs help a lot too

I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled? A few questions.?
Now, I hate surgery, I hate the idea of it, and I hate watching it on tv even, and I certainly don't want it done to me, but apparently it has to be done...Now, some silly questions because I'm "worried" by it, or what have you.
Needles? Will I be awake during any of it to see what's going on? How bad will it hurt afterwards? (I'm pretty tolerant to pain, but certain things..just get me).
Now just one a lighter note, I was born with only two of these teeth, is that rare? I honestly never had bottom wisdom teeth...

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled last year. The oral surgeon prescribed me 1 Valium to be taken about 1 hour before the surgery was to take place. This alone knocked me out! (Thank God my Dad was doing the driving!) When I got to the office, they gave me laughing gas and then afterwards the 4 sites were numbed with Novacaine (or whatever they use). I did NOT wake u throughout the procedure, slept most of the way home, and then slept pretty much for the rest of the day. On the day following the oral surgery, I had a bit of pain (likely from the injections) for which I took a Lortab, which killed the pain in a few minutes. I think I may have taken 1 more pain pill that day, but this was the sum total of pain meds I needed. It took a couple of months or the "holes" to heal up---during which time I had to keep food flushed out of them with a syringe and water.
As far as your only having 2 of these, it is no big deal. Some people get all 4, some only 1 or 2. Then there's people like my Mom, who never got any of theirs!

Reply:I had the choice of being awake or being put to sleep. I also hated having it done and elected to sleep through it.
There was pain and discomfort for a day or two after wards, but I found the painkillers the doctor prescribed were worse than the pain from having the teeth removed. The pills made me violently ill. Ibuprofen worked well enough.

it will be sore after ward, an inexplicable soreness that only "dental pain" can provide.
Maybe your lower wisdom teeth will come in a bit later...?
Reply:Yeah you will probably be awake. It only takes a few seconds to take out each upper (maybe a little longer if they haven't erupted). I had mine out years ago, just felt a dull ache that ant OTC analgesic will take care of.
Reply:Listen it depends how good your oral surgeon is... if he sucks well you might be one of the not so lucky ones. The good news is that I went through and I little to no pain during or afterwards. And a little advice... stop being a sissy.
Reply:I had all four of mine pulled at once. Your rare birth 'defect' turned into a plus in this case! LUCKY! Anyway..you are asleep the entire time. You'll feel ok at first...woosy and out of it. Once that wears off, take your pain meds and keep on top of that! Don't be the hero and see if you can take the pain. By the 3rd day, I was totally fine and moving around like normal, but I was pretty much out of it for 48 hours. Good Luck! (Ask for some valium to take prior if you are really nervous)

Reply:They are gonna fudge you up with some kinda good drugs, you're just gonna wake up and everything will be done, let me tell you those are some good drugs, the worst thing about it is when the numbness goes away and then the pain will start, those were some good drugs, but they will prescribe you with some painkillers, but the operating drugs were better, just be prepared to get drunk if you can cause it will make your life a whole lot better, damn those were some good drugs. I woke up with my momma in the room saying "Damn those were some good drugs"
Reply:When I had my wisdom teeth extracted I was completely out. It is not too bad if you follow the instructions they will give you , you will do just fine. I had no trouble and very little pain. They will probably give you pain pills for after the surgery. Now keep in mind, I had mine removed about 20 years ago and they certainly do things different now.

Reply:ask to be put asleep - you will feel a slight prick in your arm but that is it - makes the surgery easier for you and the surgeon - you will probably be prescribed codeine for the pain (i was) - and if you apply ice as directed there will be a minimal amount of pain - but there will be a lot of blood - so don't freak out - I would suggest having a friend over to watch some movies - I don't know if it is rare - you don't state your age , so maybe they haven't grown in yet - if you never get them consider yourself lucky , my brother had 2 sets of 4 each (he must've need the wisdom) - anyway good luck and you'll be fine- you should better in a day , able to eat normally w/in a week

I was swollen and bleeding and had to go home on a MTA bus. Talk about miserable. I was sick (from swallowing seeping blood) and I was in pain. Horrible Horrible...

1.) get "put under" if possible, it will cause less stress, and keep you more "worry free" if you cant hear, see, or smell what they are doing. a little bit extra for it, but i would HIGHLY recommend!
2.) needles....if you choose to not be "put under" then yes, they will be giving you shots of Novicane, more than once, throughout the whole surgery, not bad, but annoying. just like getting a filling taken care of.
you are lucky that you only have the top 2 to be removed. when i had all 4 removed, the top ones DIDNT hurt at all, i remember asking the doctor if he forgot to take them out, because it didn't feel like anything happened up there. same thing with my boyfriend.
you'll have some swelling, but nothing major, and they should give you a prescription for pain killers, and antibiotics to prevent infections in your open sockets.
a word of advise though.....take the pain killers BEFORE the numbness wears off, trust me, it WILL hurt if you don't

Reply:You will be put into a chair facing away from the instrument table so you don't have to look at the tools. They are not fun to look at so don't.
The injection wil be only a slight burning sensation and you will be completely numb after that. It is a very good product.
They will do exactly what you think they are going to do.They grab your tooth with a pair of special tooth pliers and pull it out. You will eel your head jerk a little and your will feel your skull release the tooth and you will feel the tools against your face and neck. It is not painful but it is a bit alarming. There will be some blood, but not that much. You will have a large hole in your jaw line after that for a while. They will treat the socket so it will not become infected and soon you will be all healed up. The ligament that holds your tooth will shrink and the hole will close up and it will be a fresh new thing for your tongue to investigate.

They then put a mask on his face *( the gas )* and he was soon "floating and out of it... THEN they gave him an I.V. in his hand... *( some will do arm )*... You don't really feel this I.V. or anything because you are all gased up, and at peace, nothing will bother you.... That then put him to sleep... He woke up, and had tons of Gauze in his mouth... He laid down in a little recovery room, and relaxed, then I drove him home... *( You won't be able to drive home afterwards, do to the tireness of the drugs )*... When in the recovery room, he told me he wanted a cheeseburger and sex, with the nurse RIGHT there... She told him "No, not today can you have that." but he doesnt remember saying that.... He came home and slept for about 5 hours, and I went and got his scripts filled. He began feeling better a couple days later, but the first couple of days you want to stick with foods that have no acid... *( no tomatoes, orange juice, stuff like that )*.... He had to go back a week or so later to get his stiches removed, *( in which he didn't know he had for a couple of days, until I told him he had to go get em removed,)*... He had no pain while they removed them at all... *( and went by himself)*... My husband is a baby in every possibly way... He whines over everything... In your case only having to get 2 out is AWESOME!!! my husband also had to get 4 out... so you are blessed in that sense... Every dentist that I called to ask how they "pull" wisdom teeth, all do it the same exact way... Soooo when making your apt, ASK THEM how they do it, anddd if it makes you a little uneasy, then find another dentist...

Reply:I only had 3 wisdom appear for me instead of the usual 4. My oral surgeon put me to sleep as my teeth were impacted and he was going to have to cut through bone to remove them. I had some pain after-wards for app. 4 days. I had some bleeding for 5-6 hours. I looked like a chipmunk with its cheeks stuffed full of food for a few days. They also had me on antibiotics for 2 weeks. The biggest risks are infection and dry socket. However, most of the time by following the dentists orders, you do just fine. They will tell you what to watch for for infection. I found that heat helped after the first 24 hours. The only needle I saw was the one for the anesthesia, they had me count backward from 100 and I made it to 97 and then I was waking up minus 3 teeth. Let the oral surgeon/dentist know of your fears and ask questions. They would rather answer them and have a patient that knows what is happening than one that has no idea what is happening.
Reply:I just recently had this done, it's simple. You'll be asleep before anything is done and when you wake up you will be numb.
Just a little advice....take the pain pills while you are numb. I know you don't need them yet but when it does start to hurt, you'll wish you had!! I 've had 9 different surgeries and 7 teeth pulled. I have a perfect smile now so it's worth it!
You'll be fine, but since I've had so much done I know from experience!!!

Reply:Needles will dull the pain, but not the extreme pressure of the jackhammer like tool and the industrial strength pliers they use to get your teeth out of your skull.
Go with the gas. Sleep through it.

Reply:I only had 3 wisdom appear for me instead of the usual 4. My oral surgeon put me to sleep as my teeth were impacted and he was going to have to cut through bone to remove them. I had some pain after-wards for app. 4 days. I had some bleeding for 5-6 hours. I looked like a chipmunk with its cheeks stuffed full of food for a few days. They also had me on antibiotics for 2 weeks. The biggest risks are infection and dry socket. However, most of the time by following the dentists orders, you do just fine. They will tell you what to watch for for infection. I found that heat helped after the first 24 hours. The only needle I saw was the one for the anesthesia, they had me count backward from 100 and I made it to 97 and then I was waking up minus 3 teeth. Let the oral surgeon/dentist know of your fears and ask questions. They would rather answer them and have a patient that knows what is happening than one that has no idea what is happening.
Reply:I just recently had this done, it's simple. You'll be asleep before anything is done and when you wake up you will be numb.
Just a little advice....take the pain pills while you are numb. I know you don't need them yet but when it does start to hurt, you'll wish you had!! I 've had 9 different surgeries and 7 teeth pulled. I have a perfect smile now so it's worth it!

Reply:You will be numbed and he will yank it out. It is the post-op bleeding that is a concern. I would recommend that you stay in the office until you are sure the bleeding has fully stopped.

Reply:i think its good. i had all of mine pulled at one time. the first day was painful, but they gave me tylenol w/ codein, that made the pain stop. the 2nd day no pain, your face will get swollen though. my advice is put a warm washcloth on your face, that helps swelling go down and pain. after 2 or 3 days you may be a little swollen but pain should be gone.

I did not have to have surgery as mine were not impacted, and it was an in office procedure and I drove myself home (although I wouldn't recommend it again). The nitrous made me feel dizzy and sweaty...I don't think it relaxed me...actually made me more anxious. They let me "rest it off" after the procedure.
I was sore the next couple of days and ate soft food for several days...but it was worth it in the end because I was no longer getting food caught in the gum line...no more infections!

I was so druged it barely hurt, I was pretty much considered drunk when I woke up. Wisdom teeth getting pulled on Monday what to expect?
I have an appointment to get my wisdom teeth extracted on Monday at an oral surgeons office. They are all the way through so they are not impacted, so I believe my only option is to get them pulled. Has anyone went to an oral surgeon for this procedure if so what can I expect? I am sure there will be shots to numb it locally, but what about nitrious oxide? This surgeon does the IV sedation what is that? Is it cheaper since I will not have to have them cut out? Any info would help I am really nervous.

You should be fine tho, i've had mine out as have both my kids, they will give you pain meds (make sure you take with food) you will want to take a few days rest. They will also give you instructions on how to take care of your mouth afterwards. have plenty of soft foods available and make sure you have an ice pack(frozen peas work well) to help with any pain and possible swelling. Good luck and don't worry, you will be fine.
Reply:I got the 2 top wisdom taken out and they just did a local and tynenol with codine which is pretty strong than normal. but my friend got nitrous and vicodin so i guess it depends on the doc. it almost like a surgury they have to cut the gum if the tooth is not out yet a they take it out and stitch up. just dont be scared to ask for more anesthesia if you need it and you shouldnt feel a thing. and take you pain killer which the doc recommends because after its going to hurt a lil but nothing a pill cant cure. hope this helps

The iv needle hurts a little going in but once they inject the medication within five seconds you are out. You wake up what feels like immediately (but for me was like 15 minutes only) and they let you lay around for a short time period and then go home. I honestly did not have much pain at all. The worst part was the anticipation. My teeth were not impacted at all either so it was a simple pull. In fact I ate some soup that night without a problem. I was a nervous wreck because it was my first time "under" but it ended up not being bad at all.

I didn't even get the percription the doctor gave me filled, I just took ibu profen and the other medication the doctor gave me, not the painkillers though. It's nothing to worry about, the discomfort only lasts about a week, you'll be fine.

Afterward you should be given some cotton pads to soak up the blood from the procedure. Change those within 2 hours. Don't sleep with them in. Plan on doing nothing for a good few days afterward (longer if impacted, but you aren't so no worries). The pain tends to peak on the second or third day after the surgery. Follow pain med directions as your dentist recommends (I was just told to use ibuprofen and it's generally fine for simple procedures)
Stick to liquid/soft foods. Don't strain your jaw with chewing. Creamed soups (squash, tomato, etc) are great, beef broth, apple sauce, yogurt, and lots of juice. Make sure you are eating regularly - your body needs food to heal itself.
Some people get nauseas from sedation or from the blood that remains so check with your dentist about anti-nausea medications. Here in Canuckia Gravol is easy to find and works quit well for most folk (usually just behind the counter at the pharmacy, but you don't need a prescription for it).
Lastly, you can do warm salt rinses to help speed healing and prevent infection. I'd wait til the second or third day for this, personally, but that's just me. Basically, some warm water and enough salt that you can taste it. Sip some (without swallowing) and tip your head so that the water falls to where your teeth were. Do not swish - it can dislodge the blood clot. Let the water fall out of your mouth after a minute or so - spitting can also dislodge the clot.
Don't drink through a straw, smoke, or make any suction with your mouth for the first week at least because it can dislodge the clot and you so don't want the pain involved. Swelling and pain are normal. You can use cold compresses on your cheek til your swelling goes down (10-20min on, 10-20min off), and warm compresses afterward to speed healing

i just had my wisdome teeth taken out on tuesday. my stitches started comming out today...im not sure if this is normal or not...if i stick my finger in my mouth u can even see the blood only if u wipe it...but i put a gause pad in my mouth and took it out later and there was blood on it...should i worry...what should i do...i wasnt given any paper to say wut to do and what not to do

Take an advil, don't drink from straws or suck on anything (cigarettes, soup on a spoon, nada.) and wait it out. Better yet, if your dentist gave you drugs, take them and sleep it off. If by Tuesday you aren't feeling 100% better, call your dentist and see if he can schedule you a checkup to see why it's still acting up. If you're young, it should grow back fairly easily.

Also try putting salt on warm water and just filling your mouth with it then just let go of it, don't gargle or swish it because it can disturb the clot and you want it to clot so it start healing put a new gauze on it and don't remove it for at least 6 hours, don't use any mouth wash at all because it can disturb he clot as well. I hope this heps you, I had mine done over 10 year ago but I'm a nurse.

Reply:Soup is good. If you like cream of wheat can do that (make it watery enough.) Fruit smoothies is another. You may have to let it get room temp. though.
Reply:Pasta's, mashed potatoes, omelet, cooked Veggies like green beans, soups, soft breads and french fries . All hot things cool down to luke warm that is you best bet. Think soft too. Hoped this helped. Take care.
