Anyone had all 4 of their wisdom teeth pulled? :'(?

I am 20 years old, and I have to get ALL 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled out on FEB. 23rd and I am scared to death. I dont like pain, and the part that scares me the most, is that I dont know what to except, or what they will do first, and last. Can someone please, please, give me a true-detailed-step-by-step day of what I should expect from the second I get there, from what kind of pain i will feel, will i feel any pain? will i be completely put to sleep durring the surgery? are there any shots to put me to sleep? is it a gas? how long will my mouth hurt after its over with? IM SO SCARED!!!!!!! :'( I made the appointment just now, and already my heart is racing...i dont like pain... oh God...I need somebody who has been thru this, so I can get some sleep tonite..please.

I would really appreciate it...thank you!

I had all four of mine cut out in oral surgery. They were still inside my jaw. So I am not sure if yours have come through, but the steps should be pretty similar.

If you are getting an actual surgery at the hospital, they will give you a shot in your butt to relax you before the surgery. They may give you an IV in order to give you anesthesia to put you to sleep or they may just give you another shot. After this you wont remember anything until you are awakened.

Your mouth will be stuffed with cotton or gauze. This is put in there to put pressure on the wound and to keep it from bleeding. They will take this out when you awaken. Your mouth will be sore, but they should give you pain meds to take for a few days. Buy some Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin (whichever works for you) for the time you don't need the heavier duty pain meds. Your face may swell and bruise. This is normal. And you will have a hard time eating for the first 24-48 hours. So buy some soft foods that you like ahead so you have something to slurp on.

It really isn't bad. If you are prepared for what they are going to do, your mind wont play tricks on you. Like I said earlier these steps may differ from what they are going to do you. Write down any questions you can think of and ask them. They will be more than willing to answer any of your questions no matter how silly you think they are in order that you are informed and comfortable with the procedure.

Good Luck.
Reply:I am 20 too and got all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled a year ago %26amp; 2 were impacted. Dont be scared at all. I hate the dentist but the good news is you get put to sleep! I dont know if all surgeons are the same but what happened with mine was I got put to sleep with a gas mask, which isnt scary at all, one minute your talking to the doc the next your asleep! you wake up feeling really tired %26amp; dizzy, but dont feel too much pain b/c you have medicine ( i got vicodin, which eases the pain completely!) You can take the pain killers for the next couple of days until the pain goes away, even moving down to advil or something lower dosage. I was back to work 2 days after they pulled them. Just rest alot, drink alot of fluids, take your pain killers %26amp; keep an ice pack on it from swelling and you will be fine =) good luck!! Trust me i would rather get put to sleep %26amp; have teeth pulled then get a needle %26amp; filing, its not so bad!
Reply:k with me i was unconcious (id do that to if i were you lol), what they do is they place a barrier in the back of your mouth to stop you from bleeding into your airway, then they snip snip, yank saw and do whatever, then you wake up in a very perculiar mood and very drousy, with a **** ton of pain pills in your hand, then you spend some time thanking pharmacitical companies for oxycodine, or whatever they give you now days (my surgury was major due to the nature of my wisdom teeth which were growing into the bone). it really just aches, no big pain, but nothing good to chew on for a week or two :'( youll be fine though
Reply:I had mines done when i was only 15.

there gonna give u a shot that puts u to sleep.

when u wake up and ur going to be like,,"what happen did we start yet?"

when u wake up...ur gonna have a headache.

and its gonna be bleeding alot.

but ur gonna have like sum cloth in it.

you prolly need to eat sum soup.

sumthing u cant chow but only swallow.

it hurted me for like a week.

it will hurt after you get it pulled.

you wont be able to talk as much or open ur mouth.

you prolly should just sleep all day

the best thing to do.

dont worry about it.

its going to be fine.
Reply:some of those questions are for your dentist. i only had 2 of my taken out but i had to get surgery for 1 of them. my dentist didn't put me to sleep he just made everything numb. and i didn't even feel the tooth being pulled out. it was just a little pull and then it was out. now for my second tooth he had to go in and cut stuff up and i don't remember what but i still didn't even feel anything. the only thing you have to worry about is keeping the holes clean until the holes heal. i was back in class that same day.
Reply:They have told me since I was 16 I needed to have mine out. They are still there. No problems with them yet. No teeth misalignment or cavities. HOWEVER if I ever get a cavity back there I will have the tooth yanked but now the dentist said it's no big deal since they are all the way out now and have been since I was 25. Maybe you can give it time. Dentists like to make as much money as they can.
Reply:I feel your pain!!..I was a bit older when they took mine out than you are....But I have to tell you honestly it does hurt the day after (week after) pretty bad..They will give you pain medication..Take it the way they said..Don't think your tuff and wait for it to start hurting before you take the medication!!..That was probably the biggest mistake I made..Also make sure you eat things that are soft and easy to chew or don't require chewing at all...(mac %26amp; Cheese, pudding, jello, stuff like that)..It will feel kind of funny for about a month afterwards too because you will have these huge craters in the back of your mouth..But you will get use to it and you will be just fine..Many, many people have been through it before....Good Luck..ss

P.S. take a discman and blanket to your appointment...The noise will drown out the dental sounds and the blanket will keep you warm..I chose to be on the laughing gas too..That was interesting stuff!!..lol
Reply:Nick had all 4 of his pulled when he was 21. As long as you have an experienced, respectable dentist, you have nothing to worry about. It's a pretty routine minor surgery. Nick wasn't under all the way, just novacained up. It feels like grinding against the back of your mouth. He couldn't talk for about two days, but after that he healed very quickly. Just follow doctor's orders, clean as needed and you'll be fine.
Reply:I've been through that. It depends on the condition of your teeth (e.g. fully impacted, partially impacted, fully exposed, etc). I had 2 partially impacted and 2 fully impacted that all came out.

I went in, they gave me an IV and told me to count backwards from 100. Next thing I knew, my teeth were gone and I felt funky from the drugs, but didn't really feel a lot of pain.

I was given an antibiotic and pain killer prescription and sent home.

Now... take your pain killers and antibiotics as prescribed! That helps a LOT. Make sure you have bags of frozen peas and/or corn in your freezer -- use them (wrapped in a towel) on your face as much as possible post-surgery. This will keep the swelling down.

Do NOT drink from a straw -- that's the easiest way to get dry sockets which hurt like hell. Just take small sips from a glass. Eat super-soft foods like mashed potatoes or over-cooked mac %26amp; cheese until your mouth has a chance to heal.

I didn't experience a ton of pain... but then I took my pain killers, too! I also didn't have much swelling.... most people couldn't tell I'd had my teeth out.

You have nothing to be afraid of! Put trust in your oral surgeon to take good care of you! :-)

Good luck!
Reply:I'm 22 and I had mine pulled about 7 months ago and I got all four pulled. Honestly, it wasn't that bad. Everyone's experience is different but mine was fine. You'll be totally out during the procedure. They gave me the gas and then an i.v. I was sore the day or two after but just stay on the pain meds and you'll be in a great mood and the pain won't be bad. It wasn't that long of a procedure, maybe an hour? The roots of my bottom teeth were wrapped around some bone and they were saying it would be kinda hard to get them out so if mine was a difficult surgery and I felt fine so soon after then I wouldn't worry. I actually think I went out to a bar the next night, which drinking is totally against the rules, but I felt fine so I wasn't too worried. You'll be fine, if it is kinda painful, it's nothing that won't end so just think of it that way. It won't last forever and you get some fabulous painkillers lol so don't worry!
Reply:yeah ,all at the same time ,20 years ago ,in the military, you don't need to be scared , they usually give you gas .
Reply:I'VE READ EVERY-ONES COMMENTS AND THEY'RE ALL SPOT ON! DON'T BE AFRAID.AND EVEN TELL THE DOC THAT YOU'RE NERVOUS. THEY WILL MAKE YOUR EXPERIENCE UNEVENTFUL -- AND A PIECE OF CAKE!!!
Reply:I had one pulled that was a piece of cake, the other 3 had to be forcibly removed.

If you afraid, ask them to knock you out.

One thing that helped me alot afterwards were these gel cooling packs you put in the freezer. Buy at least two so you can chill one while using the other.
Reply:i'm 19 almost 20 and i got my wisdom teeth pulled when i was 17. All i requested was Novacane and the "surgery" went pretty well to my standards. It is a bit more expensive to use the other drugs oh and you MUST have somebody else drive you there and drive you back. They gave me a codene (can't spell its pronounced "coh-deen") pill which my mom says after i took it that codene was another form of cocaine and that sh*t made my headaches MANY times worse so don't take that dam pill!!!!! i was extremely sick the whole day from it and that pill was -no kidding- torture. You will have a very bad headache after the apointment and may feel nautious but the best thing to do is take asprin extra strength and try to fall asleep as soon as you get home before it gets so bad you cant think. but however bad it feels don't take that "pain releiver" pill. They won't tell you its codene but it is. If you're not very sensitive to drugs like i am i suggest smoking a joint even if you're against that sort of thing you will want something like that. I think i'm one in a million but i get headaches when i'm high but everyone else it's the opposite. either way, you will be fu**ed for the rest of that day lol. oh yeah, and your cheeks will swell up like bowling balls and people will stare at and make fun of you.
Reply:Yes I was out cold and there was no pain at 15 cuz mine came early....i was in an operating room but nowadays my kids were given sleeping medicine and were in a dentists office for just two hours....DONT YOU WORRY It will be over soon. I will say a prayer for you ok??? OOO
