I'm only 25, and scared that i'm going to have all my teeth pulled out?!?

I have always gone to the dentist regularly, gotten my cleanings, and I brush and floss my teeth. My mom made sure we went to the dentist every six months, yet it never fails that every time I go to my dentist, I have to have ANOTHER filling. Right now, I have fillings on all my back teeth, but none on my front teeth. The last visit, the dentist told me that I have four new cavities that I will need to have filled. I am terrified that if I continue to get cavities, then there will be no more tooth space to fill and then I will end up having to have all my teeth pulled. The dentist said I have good teeth but I think she was trying to make me feel better because there is no way that having over half your teeth filled with fillings, and more to come, qualifies as good teeth. I don't know what else to do. I brush, floss, and use both an antiseptic mouthwash and a fluoride rinse, but it's never enough. At this rate, is it likely that all my teeth will be gone soon?

No you are not about to lose all your teeth. I had all but one of my back teeth filled by 18 back in the 80s and a few front ones too. Sometimes they have to be refilled, but I've never had to have one out so far.

I think they qualify as "good teeth." I've kept them and at present there is no reason why you can't keep yours if you want to keep them.

The thing is why are you still getting so many cavities? I did because I kept eating chocolate (esp twix bars - daily!!!).

I had probs in more recent years when wayward women in the office kept force feeding me chocolate (usually Belgian chocolates) when they handed them round the office whenever anybody had been on business trip abroad.

I resisted with all my weak will and later suffered for my sins. I am having probs with my sole (previously unfilled) wisdom tooth and maybe that will have to come out eventually.

I've been good lately though (cue halo emoticon).

So if you are serial chocolate/sweet muncher cut it out and reduce the misery. If you carry on you may well have to have extractions.

There may be another problem other than diet and I apologise that I a past sinner have impuned you wrongly.

If serious problems persist and you can't stand it any more then why not consider volunteering for the thing you fear most and get it over with? Get all your teeth whipped out at once (this should be done under gas so you won't feel or know a thing) and go for dentures.

Of course once it's done it can't be reversed so think carefully about it. Dentures have their own problems.

This used to be quite common at the age of 21 pre war - as a birthday present believe it or not - to save on the cost and misery of repeated dental treatment. There's pros and cons.

I've at least thought about it. There was all this scare stuff about mercury fillings (don't know if it's BS) and injections don't work on me well any more.

So far I've decided to stick with my trusty "good teeth" and try and look after them.

So whether or not all your teeth go is down to you really?
Reply:SLOW DOWN! I had bad baby teeth and that led to bad adult teeth (remember this when you have kids) and have fillings or crowns on every tooth. But I am not missing any and don't plan to have any pulled. I will have more crowns if necessary. When that goes bad I will have implants but I will NOT have my teeth pulled. And you don't need to either. Find a good dentist who is reserved with treatment and thinks keeping your teeth is important.
Reply:keep doing what you're doing to take care of them! you're doing well! we see cases of this every day in our office, you most likely will not lost them anytime soon, there are other methods such as crowns and bridges if anything happens. the cavities you're getting could just be small areas that could turn into something bigger later, so they're taking care of it early. it could also be that they're replacing old silver fillings in the back that may have started leaking (they do that after a while, it's normal!) i wouldn't owrry too much about it.
Reply:Well if she keeps putting mercury fillings in, you will need root canals. Metal fillings LEAK and need to be replaced eventually. You should insist on the clear/white fillings instead. They don't leak and bond right to the tooth.

I have extremely deep grooves in my teeth and have fillings in all my molars. I just had my metal fillings redone because they were leaking after only 10 years (and I'm 23). My dentist told me that no matter what I did, the grooves were going to get cavities in them, so I had most of the rest of my molars filled the last time I was at the dentist.

Your teeth aren't going to fall out because of some cavities, but you need to replace those metal fillings as soon as you can afford it.
