Frenectomy-by lower front teeth on child?

My 12 yr. old sons new dentist referred us to an ortho for a frenectomy due to the gums under his lower front teeth being "too tight" %26amp; causing his teeth to grow crooked %26amp; you can see the gums under the teeth pulling down so low. So many ?'s.

She pointed it out and showed me where the ortho would clip the muscle-it was under front teeth-the gum muscle that attaches to the inside lip. When I tried researching procedure online I could only find info on upper teeth/gums or under the tongue. So I'm confused, do they cut under his tongue or the attachment in front(where his lower gums are attached to inside lip)?

I already know he needs braces when all his baby teeth come out (prob. in a yr. or so) because since he was little his 2 lower front teeth grew in crooked-one actually grew in sideways. His dentist always said to wait until he gets older to see if it straightens out %26amp; if he needs braces but NEVER mentioned a frenectomy so now all this time has passed %26amp; then we moved out of state

A frenectomy can happen at any of the muscular attachments (most commonly discussed for upper front spacing or for "tongue-tied" people)

The lower front area is a place in a spot commonly missed by general dentist prior to orthodontics. I've seen lots of problems on the gums AFTER braces... they could have been prevented by early intervention. Your dentist has a sharp eye! I would have you see a periodontist (gum specialist) to correct the area prior to the braces.

Good luck!!
Reply:I had one done on my upper two front teeth. It's the piece of skin that attaches from the lips to the gums. It's actually a muscle which prevents the teeth from straightening properly with braces.

Mine was sliced to deaden the muscle and I was informed that my teeth may never actually straighten completely. Now as an adult I still have a slight gap between my teeth but no where near the size that it was when I was a kid.
Reply:lower jaw, high attachment of the frenum is know as tongue tie. It ties the tongue short so that speech is not free %26amp; some words are not clear. This causes the anteriour front teeth to speperate %26amp; cause space between them in later stages. Frenectomy is a simple procedure where the frenum is cut %26amp; pushed down below, relaps can happen if not done properly. It has to be done carefully or the space will get infected causing space infection.
