Why due they say not to spit or drink through a straw after pulling a wisdom tooth?

I just had my first tooth pulled and that's what my dentist told me.

Why due they say not to spit or drink through a straw after pulling a wisdom tooth?
Because if you spit or drink through a straw, you just might spit or suck the blood clot out of the extraction site.

The blood clot protects the extraction site. If you lose the blood clot, bare bone becomes exposed to your oral cavity and it will HURT. It is a condition called a "dry socket" which you will want to avoid.
Reply:Because both of those actions require creating suction in your mouth. That suction could pull the clot out of the socket where your wisdom tooth used to be and prevent healing or cause an infection. Pleasant to think about, isn't it? :)
Reply:Sucking from a straw creates a vacuum in your mouth. It takes a few hours before the crown fully seals around the remnants of the tooth. If you suck too hard, the vacuum could move the tooth and it could set incorrectly.
Reply:because you can draw the blood up and it can cause alot of pain and you don't want that and if you get dry socket now that's some pain
Reply:Cause you can get dry socket. It hurst really really bad. People that smoke after getting a tooth pulled will get dry socket more often than not. I've had it and it hurts. So stick to what he said and try to drink without a straw. It will save you some pain in the long run.
Reply:Suction can pull out the stiches
Reply:Because the suction can cause very very very painful air pockets.
Reply:They want a blood clot to form in the socket where they pulled the tooth, and sucking on a straw or spitting could cause the clot to come out.
Reply:After general anesthetic or I.V. sedation, liquids should be initially taken. Do not use straws. Drink from a glass. The sucking motion can cause more bleeding by dislodging the blood clot. You may eat anything soft by chewing away from the surgical sites. High calorie, high protein intake is very important. Nourishment should be taken regularly. You should prevent dehydration by taking fluids regularly. Your food intake will be limited for the first few days. You should compensate for this by increasing your fluid intake. At least 5-6 glasses of liquid should be taken daily. Try not to miss a single meal. You will feel better, have more strength, less discomfort and heal faster if you continue to eat.

Reply:I have been searching the internet, and cannot find the answer to "HOW LONG Should you wait before sucking through a straw" after surgery. Does anyone out there know the answer to this? Should you wait a day? A week? A month? Until you are completely healed?
