I need all my wisdom teeth pulled on Monday....?

....i'm only getting the novocaine shots. I'm really nervous. All but one of my wisdom teeth are still under my gums and the other is only half way out. That one is impacted. What can I expect when I go? Is it going to be really painful without being put to sleep or having the laughing gas?

You'll be just fine. The dentist will give you enough novocaine that a horse could kick you in the face and you wouldn't feel it! :)

Seriously, I'm a dental hygienist (for 20 years) and I had all four of mine extracted at the same time with only local anesthetic and to be perfectly honest, I'm a huge dental phobic! I can dish it out, but I can't take it! But I had infections in the gums around the wisdom teeth and needed them removed so I chose to do it and I swear I didn't feel a thing. You won't either. Be sure after getting the shots that your doctor waits at least 20 to 30 min. before starting so you have what we call "profound anesthesia". You'll start to get that numb and tingly feeling pretty quickly but it doesn't affect the deeper tissues right away, you need some time for that. If at any point during the extraction process you feel PAIN, stop the dentist and let him know so he can reinject more anesthesia. I stressed the word "pain" because you should be sure that it's really pain and not just pressure. You will notice alot of pressure and may hear odd sounds as the doctor wiggles the tooth out. Pressure is not pain and it shouldn't bother you at all, it helps to know to expect that ahead of time. No anesthesia gets rid of pressure, but it's nothing bad, really. You'll do just fine. :)
Reply:I'm glad I made you feel a little better! I also recommend that you bring along an iPod or something too, if you wish for distraction. Just don't try to lip sync while the doc is working!! :) Report It

Reply:No..not at all..all your worry is worse than the pulling of the teeth...i had them all done at once..thinking about what they are doing can irritate you ao when they are doing it ...try to think of something else.
Reply:No the Novocaine will take care of the pain
Reply:Had mine done years ago, when I was 20. Yes, it hurt, but doesn't last forever, and with modern dentistry, and far better Novocaine shots....you will do just fine. The dentist will even numb your gums before the injection, so you will hardly feel anything. You will also get a prescription for pain pills, and a word of advice, get it filled first, so you can just go right home and not have to wait for the pharmacist. I think that you are probably hurting more from these impacted teeth than you will from having them out. Best wishes
Reply:Honestly, you'll be fine. I had my 2 top ones out without gas and I was awake. To tell you the truth it was the sound I couldn't stand! ask if you can take an ipod in. Also make sure you take pain relief in the days after. I stopped on the 3rd day and a few hours latter the pain was unbearable! If you follow that after care instructions you'll be fine. Also i found being propped up high on pillows when I slept helped as well...........Be BRAVE!! Good luck
