I went to the dentist today and he pulled two teeth?

After extracting two teeth today he gave me a prescription for Vicodin ES. The top one he pulled seems to be alright but the moler that he pulled on the bottom is throbbing. I am taking the pain pills but am getting no relief. Any suggestions so that I may get some sleep?

Sounds like a dry socket...call the dentist and they will put a medicine directly into the healing area to soothe it. Sounds painful, but it isn't bad, really. A normal extraction area will create a blood clot which is like nature's Band-Aid. If that clot didn't form properly, or came out for some reason, (like swishing/rinsing in the first 24hrs) then the bone and nerve endings are exposed to saliva, food bits, etc. The dentist will put a medicine into the area, usually a paste on a small strip of sterile cloth into the site to cover and protect the bone. It should be removed and changed by him every few days. You will feel immediate relief. I've had one and I know the pain. Good luck.
Reply:Maybe put ice on it?
Reply:Must be bad if vicodin isn't working. Tell the dentist about it and he might give your more.

Maybe part of the nerve is still there.
Reply:Have you rinsed your mouth with warm water and salt since he pulled it? If the area is imflammed or very warm, you may have the start of an infection. I would give it till tomorrow and if it is still throbbing, then contact the Dentist
Reply:i also had 2 teeth recently pulled....ice it and continue to take the pain meds...put on some low soft music and read yourself to sleep...hope you feel better soon! (best not to drink warm milk, cocoa, or hot tea, as may dissolve the blood clot)
Reply:Bottom teeth cause more pain because they don't drain properly. Call your dentist in the morning but meanwhile rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help prevent a dry socket.
Reply:you could try some type of over the counter pain

medication with the Vicodinsuch as Advil or Tylenol. It is make up of different ingredients than the Vicodin so you wouldn't be taking the same type of pain killer
Reply:NO, NO, NO, do NOT rinse your mouth with anything for the first 24 hours!

If you do, you will be back here in a week asking what to do about your dry socket.

Elevate your head on a couple of extra pillows, keeping the side where the teeth were removed higher than the other side. Don't put the surgical side on your pillow. You might evenmake out better trying to sleep in a recliner.

Ice helps. 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.

It might help if you take two pieces of 2x2 gauze (or one 3x3), fold it in half and then into thirds, wet it, squeeze out the water, and bite gently on the gauze for a while. This is what to do to stop bleeding, I know, but it may also help relieve some of your pain. Try it. The worst that can happen is that it doesn't work. If it doesn't work, don't vote for me. That's all.

AND - Your Rx probably says to take one tablet. Do not exceed this amount, but you can add another 250 mg of plain Tylenol to this dose. That's half an extra strength Tylenol. This will bump you up to the standard effective dose of acetaminophen. Do not exceed a total of 4,000 mg of Tylenol per 24 horus, though. Vicodin ES has 750 mg of Tylenol in it, so do the math.

Good luck.
Reply:tell ur dentist and stay away from sugar.
Reply:when i had my wisdom teeth removed, i found that advil was, oddly, much more effective (i was pain free!) than vicodin. feel better!
Reply:You might have a dry socket...either they left part of the tooth in there or they have hit a nerve if it doesn't clear up in a couple of days I would call the dentists back and tell him and you will probably have to go back in!!
