Getting wisdom teeth pulled today...help!?

I am 33, and have to get my wisdom teeth plus one molar removed today. They are not impacted or anything, the doctor says it should be a pretty standard procedure.

I am totally petrified though...I have a huge fear of doctors and all of the things that come with it.

I am opting to get gas to relax me and local. The whole IV and going to sleep makes me very uneasy.

Any encouraging words would be greatly appreciated!

Also, do you think it is OK to drink coffee? It doesn't thin the blood?

Getting wisdom teeth pulled today...help!?
don't worry you will be fine....i had all 4 of mine taken out last summer and i did do the general anestesthia....my two bottom ones were impacted so that's why but anyway i woke up a little groggy but i wasn't in any pain during the whole healing process...i actually healed really well and witin a few days to a week i could eat the foods i wanted again....i also didn't have a lot of bleeding at all so just eat soft foods today and the next few days and take your pain meds and antibiotics and you will be fine good luck!
Reply:I wouldn't worry to much about the pain aspect of it. As soon as the gas and local wear off you will probaly have medication and you'll barely feel pain anyways. As far as coffee goes, the only way coffee can thin your blood is if you've been drinking it for a long time like 30+years then it can start too.
Reply:hi.. i just got my teeth pulled out last week so i know what your going through! =)

guess what? its nothing like as bad as it sounds! honest..

i went in to get two of my wisdom teeth pulled out initially,, but the procedure went so fast that the doctor just went ahead and pulled all four! it didn't take up more than an hour.. no pain! the only pain it caused me was the embarrasment! my lips were so numb.. the doctor ordered me to get ice cream and so i did.. and everything just dribbled and i couldn't feel anything!

soo,, don't worry okay.. =) it'll be fine.. promise..
Reply:you will be fine

i got my wisdom teeth removed a few months ago and didn't feel a thing.

just take the pills the doctor gives you after your done because you will feel a little pain
Reply:OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go for the IV and sleep it out!!

Take above normal amounts of pain meds and sleep the day away and maybe tomorrow as well!!

Buy lots of yogurt and cup of soup, that is all you will be able to handle when hungry!!

I was a wimp so I do not envy you at all, I would have rather had someone tweeze my eyebrows one hair at a time while standing on shards of glass than go through that again.

Sorry for the bad news, hope it goes well for you.

By the way, if you like coffee, drink up now, because you will not want to do anything you even remotely like soon.
Reply:Bring and iPod, or similar, since there are yucky noises. There will be pressures you feel that shouldn't be painful, but feel very strange and a little scary for some people. Have a little morning coffee, but don't have any afterwards, until tomorrow. The coffee will accelerate the heart rate. You'll have plenty of adrenaline of your own doing that. An accelerated heart rate can wear the anesthetic off faster.

Remember to breathe!! So many people hold their breath, so the gas doesn't work too well then. When you feel pressures or whatever, consiously think about slow easy breathing ( not too fast or deep necessarily)

Also, it helps to focus on the big toe on your right foot. Think about the toe, toenail, between the toes, etc. Try to imagine feeling every square millimeter of that toe. It gives you a place to focus other than on your mouth.

Good luck!!
Reply:I had a tooth pulled once, hurt more then any other experience, I passed out when the Dentist finished. Latter in life had wisdom teeth pulled took five minutes almost no pain. Had a cavity filled last year without Novocaine. Felt the same as with Novocaine except my lips and tongue weren't numb. Its the doctor not the act.
Reply:I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled as well. They were impacted. I got put out and was fine. Doctors know what they are doing so you'll be just fine. Try to relax as if you are nervous then the gas may not take properly. Also I wouldn't drink coffee. You don't know what your reaction to gas or other sedatives will be and you don't want to be sick while you're under. good luck. You will be just fine though. Make sure someone else drives you there. You will be groggy afterwards. I hate dentists too but I always feel so much better after going. Keep your chin up and good luck.
Reply:At 33, Believe me when I say, it is better to have it remove asap. Later years would cost more problem. It is normal to have fears but you have to understand and remember that your fear can already be managed by new techniques. Your fear of pain and apprehension will disappear because of the IV and the local anaesthesia..And you won't feel any pain at all. And knowing that you are being treated by a good dentist is enough for you to feel safe. Dentists knows what they are doing. And you also don't have to worry about what happens after the procedure because your dentist will give you medications and procedure how too manage your post-operative pain. Knowing that pain can be managed is enough to lessen your apprehension. You can do it. If anyone can do it like removing at the same time their 4 impacted molars , you can too. Re the coffee, your dentist will check you out first if you are fit to undergo the procedure. Coffee doesn't have anything to do with it. Of course , you have to inform your dentist if you are taking medications that could have an effect to the procedure like if you have HPN or hypertension, heart condition , diabetes, or if you are allergic to certain medication or food or if you are taking medications like coumadin or heparin than thins the blood. These are all done before the procedure and usually a standard operative procedure before the treatment. So, be honest, so the dentist will know how to manage you well.
Reply:I'm 34 and had all four if my wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. I wasn't bad at all. The top two teeth came out in about 20 seconds each. The roots on my lower ones curved in toward each other so it took a little more work. You will feel pressure, that's all you should you feel. If you feel any other sensation let the dentist know. You will be given pain meds, you will need them. I was extremely sore yesterday, and I just laid around the house all day. My mouth is still a little sore today but it's tolerable. You won't feel like eating anything you have to chew for a couple days. I was referred to an oral surgeon originally to get these teeth removed, but I didn't like the idea of being put under either, and the cost is 3xs as much. I found a dentist that said she could pull them and everything went good. Drinking coffee is fine, don't take aspirin though. Anything that creates a suction in your mouth, drinking from a straw, smoking, spitting, isn't recomended for 72 hours after the procedure. Just follow the dentist instructions, enjoy the pain meds thay are going to give you, and stick to soft foods for a few days and you will be fine. Good luck!
