I am getting twelve teeth pulled in one day and getting an immediate denture (upper and lower) in one morning.

How much pain will I be in..? Does the gumline ever swell up so much that you can't get the dentures out the next day to rinse and gargle, etc.....? Does any one have dentures and know the pros and cons? I have teeth that I'm going to lose eventually and I'm tired of the toochaches, gums aching, bleeding, headaches....due to my teeth slowly but surely being lost.

I am getting twelve teeth pulled in one day and getting an immediate denture (upper and lower) in one morning.
Ummm... WOW!!! That's a lot of teeth to be pulled in one day. They will definitely be giving you TONS of pain killers. One hurts.. I can't imagine 12! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:i know someone who has dentures

pro's u dont need to worry about teeth falling out when you're older, nice straight teeth, u can just place it in warm water with denture pill to clean it

con's it might come out of ur mouth if u open ur mouth too wide like when laughing, it feels weird at first,, kinda embarrassing to brush ur teeth with other people
Reply:Veneers are usually seen as a more expensive but far more comfortable and natural solution to dentures. Your gums will be highly sensitive, but the pain will pass over the course of a few weeks. However, you'll have to take good care of your clots, gumline and the like. The swelling should be minimal if the extraction goes smoothly.

See my source link for more information on Veneers as an alternative.
Reply:I feel that the gums have to be given time to shrink at lease three months or the dentures will never fit proper

of course there will be pain it is surgery.
Reply:my husband last week had his top plate removed adn a denture put in as well as his wisdom teethe cut out. pain, yea, he is in a LOT of pain. he had a couple of his finger tips crushed off a few years before and it didn't hurt half as bad, he says. but i guess that depends on your dr. because his only have his a few pain pills and won't give him anymore. plus he got it done on a Thursday and he was ok til Saturday..when the office was closed and there was no one i could call.

now his checks are what swelled. he took his denture out that day (although you are not supposed to) and he put it back in fine.

he is in a lot of pain right now. but in a few weeks and after he learns to eat again (that is what he is most upset about..he can't eat..even a soft diet hurts him right now) he will be fine and he will for the first time in years have a perfect smile. also no more pain or fear of chipping teeth when he eats (he had a lot of problems with his teeth)

now the dr had told him that getting this done Thursday that bye Monday he would be fine to go back to work. my husband just has a lot most infection than was thought. also he got a dry socket (not sure what that is exactly..real painful is all i know) from smoking.
Reply:oh my goodness, are you in for a treat ! i got 6 , no 5 teeth pull and one tooth on the back pull , and let me tell you it felt like the inside of my head was coming foreward . very excruciating pain for me . the first shot was given to me WAY up close to the inside of my mouth by my nose , and that hurting sooooo much , i could feel the tears running sideways on me . than another shot on the other side and than 2 more farther down and 2 way on the back tooth . after i was still feeling the yank of the pliers , i had 2 more shots given to me through the inside of my mouth top . very, very sensetive spot and very painful . i had 2 teeth that would not come out so i was send to surgery so they could cut my gums and split them and sewed them back afterwards . it was all a bloody mess, and my head was about to explode from all that pain , they bring a set of " imediate dentures " , and put them inside my mouth and push them up real firmly . believe me , your gums will get very swollen . they told me not to rinse or spit for 48 hours . and when i finally was able to take them out , boy , they stank from blood and smelly saliva . oh, and also no tooth paste at all for 48 hours . they told me in 6 months that it would take for my gums to get back to normal , for me to come back and realine them for premium dentures or something like that . i need to get more information about that . but let me tell you , it will be painful , i only got my upper imediate dentures . on the bottom will be partials . good luck sweetie ,
Reply:One thing that will make a large difference in any pain you might feel is if you are awake for this procedure. I'd assume that you will be knocked out for this many teeth, and if so, your pain level will be considerably less, as you won't be awake for the actually pulling of the teeth.

I went through this with just an upper denture years ago. I was only 23 at the time and there were many teeth that didn't need pulling yet but knew down the line that they would so I opted for having all of the top ones out and a denture put in.

As far as pain level. Pain level varies ALOT from person to person. If like me, you were so used to the pain from the bad teeth, you may find that the pain from having them all pulled was minimal compared to what you were used to with your tooth problems.

Swelling also varies ALOT from person to person. I had miminal swelling, and when the 2nd day came, I followed all the instructions they gave me about removing the denture over water, and was so so worried about the swelling they said might happen, making it hard to get them back in. It turned out that I was worried for nothing.

You experience may vary greatly from mine. Here is what I suggest for you.

If they give you pain meds, take them on a regular basis, as presribed, even if your pain level is low. The reason for this is that short acting pain meds work much better at keeping the pain level low if it is continous. It's much easier to regulate the pain level if you don't try to bring down the pain level from very high to low. Follow the presciption! It's prescribed that way for a reason.

Secondly, follow the surgeon's instructions on removal, rinsing, cleaning etc.

Having an upper denture is totally different from the lower denture. You'll find that the structure of your mouth helps in keeping in your upper denture, but that is not the case with the lower denture. I'm sure they've told you all this, but just to let you know, they aren't kidding.

When you go to remove them for the 1st time, do one denture at a time. Take it out, rinse it, your mouth, etc, being careful of your stitches, don't use a toothbrush yet to clean your gums. Then place that denture back in your mouth. Don't panic if it takes a bit.

It may go right back in, as mine did, or it might take a bit of work.

After you've successfully returned the one denture after rinsing, then do the next.

Along with a pain medication, they may prescribe ibuprofin or tell you to take an over the counter ibuprofin to keep the swelling down. If they tell you to take this, then also take this on a REGULAR basis. It will keep your swelling to a minimum, which will also reduce your pain.

There are alot of factors that will play a part in how high your pain level might be. Your age, your personal pain tolerance, if the surgeon had to do any invasive means to remove the teeth, etc.

You can best regulate any pain you have by following their instructions on rinsing with saltwater and baking soda in warm water, taking the meds they prescribe on a regular basis, using cold packs periodically to reduce any swelling of your gums etc.

You'll find that your gums are tender, but in following their instructions on hygeine and soft foods will keep any discomfort to a minimum.

The best advice I can give you is to not let the anticipation of pain take over.

My experience with having all my top teeth pulled at once(14 at the time) and a denture placed in my mouth before I even woke up, was very doable. I had very minimal pain, virtually no swelling, and only one tiny spot of bruising.

The pain I had had from continual toothaches and other problems was much much larger than having my teeth pulled.

I can also say that with today's dentristry, I know more than half a dozen people that have had this done, and none of them complained of pain that was intolerable or huge. Mostly it was tenderness that was taken care of with meds and cold packs.

You'll always find a horror story from someone on this procedure, but they are in the minority.

You'll be fine. You'll also be thrilled at the end of all the pain and continious dental work that you've had to put up with for the last number of years.
Reply:You are going to feel like you got socked in the face for a couple days, but keep on your pain meds and anti-inflams. Immediate dentures are going to work as your bandaids the first 48 hours, take them out to clean them and rinse your mouth lightly with warn salt water, no need to "air out" the gums at first if you take them out you may swell up so much you cant get them back on for days. You will need to eat soft food until you can chew on your new dentures. Eventually in time you will need to get the dentures relined because the bone rigdes will dramatically decrease when the teeth are removed, so the may be wobbly for a bit. And other than not having any more toothaches there are no pros to having dentures.
Reply:Don't listen to all the horror stories. Many people like to sound like martyrs even if they cut a finger. Expect some discomfort, but everyday it gets better. It is not major surgery. All my husband sees is pros for dentures. Been wearing them for 44 yrs. upper and lower. There is discomfort for root canals, implants, partials., fillings. You can read that on these questions asked. A friend has 22 pulled in one day under IV sedation had immediates put in with very little bleeding and swelling.

How can someone who never wore dentures give advise?
